The Importance of Fire Door Installation Training

Safety is a top priority in the construction industry. Fire doors are an important safety feature that must be installed correctly to prevent fires from spreading, but some people lack knowledge about the precautions that need to be taken when installing them.

A fire door can be a lifesaver in the event of a fire, as it can prevent the spread of flames and smoke between floors for up to 60 minutes. However, if a fire door is incorrectly installed, it can be more hazardous than helpful.

The Problem with Fire Door Installation

A 2019 study of 100,000 inspections found that 57% of installed fire doors failed to meet Fire Safety Regulations. The top 3 reasons for failure included; excessive gaps, smoke sealing issues, and poorly adjusted door closures.

These figures are highly concerning as internal fire doors play such a huge role in compartmentalising a building to prevent and slow the spread of fire. If construction workers and maintenance staff had the opportunity to take a fire door safety training course, this number would have been much lower and the safety of the building could be maintained.

If fire doors are installed incorrectly, they become ineffective and dangerous. For example, large gaps around the door frame allow fire and smoke to seep through. However, a gap that is too small can damage the door, and won’t allow intumescent seals enough space to expand in the event of a fire.

Making Fire Door Installation Safer

It is important that contractors and installers are aware of the detailed safety measures that should be taken when installing a fire door. If they are not, the risk of serious injury and death drastically increases.
