Why should employers focus on mental health?

The awareness around mental health is increasing, but unfortunately, there is still discrimination and difficulties in accessing help. Many of those who are experiencing mental health issues are afraid of other people’s responses, so will keep their feelings hidden.

At work, many people suffering from mental health fear being discriminated against or shamed for opening up. If we can start to create workplace cultures where people can be themselves, it can take away fear and make it easier for people to speak up about their mental health and seek help when they need it.

Opening up about personal struggles is never easy, so creating a work environment which feels safe and understanding is vital to making space for that conversation. The more a workplace is actively involved in mental health, the less embarrassed employees will feel about talking.

Risk-factors for mental health at work

While there are many risk factors for the development of mental health problems, and not all stem from the workplace, there are often additional factors at work which can exasperate existing problems:

  • Poor health and safety policies
  • Poor communication and/or management
  • No say in decision-making processes
  • Inadequate support for employees
  • Inflexible or unsociable working hours
  • Unclear tasks and objectives
  • Lack of praise and rewards
